serlachius museum gösta
Inside - outside
The aim of the design of the extension for the Serlachius Museum Gösta is to plan new future possibilities and to improve past identities in the meantime.
The connection is the principal theme: corridors and public spaces move from inside to outside, from old buildings to new ones and vice versa.
The design aims at minimizing the volumes that come out of the ground. The exhibition rooms are the only spaces that outcrop; a large and bright foyer, located at a deeper level, leads to the service spaces of the new museum.
The design is a typical urban requalification that keeps all the elements of the Joenniemi manor area together. This skill is guaranteed in two different ways:
Conversion and transformation
The design aims at concentrating the spaces in the most interesting area. The extension for the museum is located in the square in front of the historical building. Its L plan is a sort of "front scenae" which protects the plaza and the deeper foyer from the winds that blow from north and west. The foyer is considered a new "heart" for the museum for its representative and spacious entrance. Visitors who park their cars in the parking area at east can easily reach this new public "core" through a wide, inviting, welcoming and "warm" ramp.
